Investment portfolio performances of public-sector general insurance firms in India: an empirical approach

Description

This paper illustrates the major challenges faced by globally recognized classical art forms through an examination of Kutiyattam, a centuries-old and renowned theatre form from India. Kutiyattam was declared by UNESCO in 2001 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. During the mid-twentieth century, Kutiyattam performers moved beyond their traditional performance spaces in Hindu temples, encouraged by proactive support from the state. Following UNESCO recognition, state support measures for this theatre form were further strengthened. However, despite these efforts, Kutiyattam institutions in India are currently confronted with a severe economic crisis that threatens their very existence. Based on detailed field studies and stakeholder consultations, this paper analyzes the policy-related roots of the crisis and explores options for transforming Kutiyattam institutions into sustainable enterprises. We argue that the lessons drawn from this study have broader implications for similarly situated art forms in India and elsewhere.
