Intern Theory Career Solutions LLP (Intern Theory) was launched by Vamil Sangoi along with three of his classmates—Dhruvi Dharia, Anshini Jhaveri, and Jugal Choksi—midway through their four-year undergraduate studies at Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering in Mumbai. Having experienced firsthand the difficulty of finding internships during their summer break, their startup (initially called Internup) aimed to help other students secure short-term internships with companies. While some colleges assist students in finding course-required internships, most institutions do not mandate internships as part of their curriculum, and even where they are required, many do not provide adequate placement support. Regardless of whether internships are mandatory, many students actively seek them, as they provide hands-on learning opportunities and help build credibility as potential employees. On the other hand, companies offering internships can have exploratory or time-bound work completed at relatively low cost. Moreover, they can identify potential future employees from their pool of interns. Later renamed Intern Theory, the student-led startup initially operated in the Mumbai market using internal funds. It subsequently secured funding through equity investment, enabling expansion across India from its Mumbai base. The team is now exploring new strategies to strengthen its platform on both sides of the market—attracting more college students seeking internships and encouraging more companies to offer internships by addressing potential constraints. As a market maker, Intern Theory has faced several unique implementation challenges as well as opportunities on both sides. A major recent initiative is the introduction of short online courses designed to make students more “internship-ready.” While the core internship-matching service is offered free of cost, the company generates revenue by charging students for these online training programs. As new competitors enter the market, this case study provides an opportunity to analyze strategic options for the survival and growth of Intern Theory.
