Presentation on strategic policy directions for ensuing BIOFIN phase

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) will host the Biodiversity Finance Plan International Workshop on “Sustainable Production and Consumption and Novel Economic Instruments for Biodiversity Conservation” on November 17 and 18 at Classroom N001, IIMB. The workshop is being led by Professor A. Damodaran, IPR Chair at IIM Bangalore under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. Professor Damodaran was also a member of the high-level panel of the Convention on Biological Diversity on biodiversity financing strategy, which emphasized the importance of biodiversity finance initiatives that have since evolved into the global BIOFIN project. Participants will include representatives from BIOFIN member countries, international organizations, academics, and policymakers working on issues related to the workshop theme. The deliberations are expected to provide strategic policy direction for the development of an effective Biodiversity Finance Plan. The workshop will feature five main sessions: Overview Session: BIOFIN, novel economic instruments, and sustainable production and consumption Current economic instruments used in BIOFIN countries Landscape- or biome-based approaches to biodiversity conservation: state of the art Market access instruments to promote sustainable production and consumption Mainstreaming development programs for sustainable production and consumption The workshop is being organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), in partnership with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Montreal; BIOFIN Global; the National Biodiversity Authority; the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. The discussions aim to address how biodiversity finance solutions can contribute to sustainable production and consumption, and to identify mechanisms that have demonstrated positive impacts in this domain. The workshop will feature several international experts, including Dr. Rathin Roy (Member, Economic Advisory Council and Director, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy), Markus Lehmann (Convention on Biological Diversity, Montreal), and Verena Linneweber (Deputy Country Director, UNDP). Professor G. Raghuram, Director of IIM Bangalore, will also deliver a special address.
