Perception of entrepreneurial ecosystem in India: Influence of industrial versus personal context of entrepreneurs

Description

Decisions regarding new venture creation are often influenced by entrepreneurs’ perceptions of the business environment. Consequently, understanding these perceptions is critical for policymakers seeking to strengthen entrepreneurial ecosystems. The BRIC countries, as major emerging economies, have attracted collaborative research efforts involving scholars from these nations as well as Italy to examine perceptions of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This paper uses data collected by the India research team to analyze Indian entrepreneurs’ perceptions of the country’s business environment. Based on responses from 282 entrepreneurs across 11 dimensions of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, the findings indicate relatively favorable perceptions in areas such as individual competencies, support from professional peer groups, and the broader socio-cultural environment. Subgroup analyses based on industry and demographic characteristics yield additional insights. While differences across industries are limited, greater variation is observed across demographic groups. These differences are particularly pronounced with respect to age and age-related factors, suggesting that generational differences play a significant role in shaping entrepreneurs’ perceptions of the business environment.
