Ethnic conflict and civic engagement

Description

It is sometimes puzzling that, despite ethnic diversity, some places (villages, towns, or cities) manage to remain peaceful, whereas others experience violence. This paper explains how the characteristics of civic engagement in a particular location influence the occurrence of conflict. The study shows that places characterized by higher levels of “intra”-ethnic civic engagement have a greater likelihood of ethnic conflict compared to those with stronger “inter”-ethnic engagement. Moreover, wealthier economies are less prone to conflict than poorer ones. Absolute poverty also plays a significant role in precipitating conflict.
