Assets and ahocks: A gendered analysis of Ecuador, Ghana, and Karnataka, India

Description

Drawing on household survey data from Ecuador, Ghana, and Karnataka (India), we analyze the relationship between assets and shocks, distinguishing between asset loss as a direct consequence of shocks and the use of assets as a coping strategy. We find that a greater proportion of households experience asset loss as a direct result of shocks than through deliberate coping responses. In Karnataka, but not in Ghana or Ecuador, women’s assets are more likely to be sold compared to those owned by men. While asset ownership is strongly associated with decisions to sell or pawn assets, the two do not completely overlap. Additionally, husbands and wives often differ in both their perception of shocks and their responses to them.
