Adoption of Digital Payments by Small Retail Stores

Description

The entry of large supermarkets and online retailers, along with the widespread adoption of digital technologies, is challenging the business models of small convenience retail stores in India. Using a qualitative methodology and the Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) framework, this study investigates the challenges faced by these small retailers in the context of a deliberate government push toward digital payments and increasing competition from large supermarkets and online platforms. The study identifies several key challenges, including perceived loss of control, high costs of adopting technologies, customers’ low socioeconomic status, supplier influence, tax and security concerns, bureaucratic hurdles, and a lack of trust in the regulatory and broader external environment. In addition, poor physical and digital infrastructure, limited access to reliable digital technologies, and associated costs further constrain the adoption of digital solutions.
