Taking stock: Reviewing research on the treatment of persons with disabilities in organizations
Description
This chapter examines workplace discrimination faced by persons with (dis)abilities. It begins by discussing the usage, meaning, and implications of the term “disability” and the related expression “persons with disabilities.” The chapter then considers the diversity of conditions and experiences among persons with (dis)abilities by reviewing existing research on five common types of disabilities: mobility, visual impairment, hearing impairment, chronic illness, and psychiatric conditions. It further highlights the importance of national context by examining research on the experiences of persons with (dis)abilities in five countries: the United States, Canada, Germany, India, and China. By focusing on specific conditions and national contexts, the chapter underscores the need for more context-specific research, as well as for integrative studies that synthesize findings across different conditions, workplaces, and countries.
