There is fairly widespread recognition that we are moving towards a rapid process of urbanisation. Issues of development and poverty that were once primarily associated with rural areas are now gaining increasing importance in the urban context. The ability to make informed decisions and customise interventions to areas where they are most needed depends heavily on the quality of data. However, a persistent challenge is the lack of meaningful and reliable data for both research and policymaking. In this context, this book is highly significant. It recognises the gap that researchers often encounter and attempts to address it by proposing a template for building a comprehensive database over time across all habitations—not just cities. This database can be extremely useful for preparing master plans and enabling local administrations to plan and deliver civic amenities more effectively. The book begins by establishing its relevance and outlining a systematic methodology for data collection.
