Presentation of paper signalling financial performance with alternative performance measures
Description
It is sometimes puzzling that despite ethnic diversity, some places (villages, towns or cities) manage to remain peaceful, whereas others experience violence. This paper explains how the characteristics of civic engagement in a particular place influence the occurrence of conflict there. The paper shows that a place characterised by higher intra-ethnic civic engagement has greater chances of ethnic conflict compared to a place where there is more inter-ethnic engagement. Moreover, a richer economy is less prone to conflict compared to a poorer economy, while absolute poverty also plays an important role in precipitating conflict.
