Narayana nethralaya: expanding affordable eye care
Description
This case study, a 2nd Place Winner at the 2014 NextBillion Case Writing Competition, examines the Karnataka Internet-Assisted Diagnosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity (KIDROP) initiative at Narayana Nethralaya, which aims to prevent blindness among prematurely born and underweight infants. Although diagnosis and treatment for this condition are relatively simple and cost-effective, a lack of awareness in rural and underserved communities poses a major barrier to early detection and intervention. The case focuses on the challenges faced by the initiative in scaling its model to expand outreach and maximize patient coverage. It invites exploration of sustainable solutions to improve awareness, accessibility and delivery at scale, particularly in low-resource settings, while maintaining financial viability and operational efficiency.
