Sustainable cities: inclusive, green and competitive

Description

The concept of a Green Economy has been recognised by the Rio+20 Summit as one of the key tools for achieving sustainable development. It aims to promote poverty eradication, sustained economic growth, social inclusion, improved human welfare and the creation of decent employment opportunities while maintaining the health of ecosystems. Transitioning to a green and inclusive economy requires significant effort at both national and international levels, with cooperation and knowledge exchange playing a vital role. In this context, India and Germany have emerged as key partners in advancing this agenda. An interdisciplinary working group comprising experts from leading research institutions and policy organisations in both countries was established in November 2013 to facilitate collaborative learning, support informed policymaking and contribute to global discourse. The group focuses on critical themes such as frameworks and challenges for green transformation, sustainable resource use and decoupling growth from resource consumption, promotion of sustainable lifestyles and development of green and inclusive cities. This policy paper, based on discussions from the fourth expert group meeting held in April 2015 in Bangalore, highlights the importance of international partnerships and integrated policy approaches in driving a sustainable transition.
