Women who save: A comparative analysis of Ecuador, Ghana and Karnataka, India

Description

Ownership of financial assets is a key component of women’s economic empowerment. Savings provide a reliable means to cushion against economic shocks while enabling women to accumulate resources for acquiring productive assets. Access to personal savings can enhance women’s bargaining power and decision-making within households, allowing them to invest in their children’s education and nutrition or gain the autonomy to exit adverse situations. Despite its importance, there is limited large-scale comparative evidence on patterns of women’s savings. While prior research has examined marginal impacts of women’s financial inclusion, broader patterns and determinants remain insufficiently understood. Key unanswered questions include differences in savings behaviour between urban and rural women, the influence of household wealth on women’s savings, cross-country variations across different stages of development, and the relationship between women’s savings and ownership of other assets such as housing, land and businesses.
