Patterns in terror attacks in urban and semi-urban India: an empirical investigation
Description
Terrorism and insurgency in India can broadly be classified into four categories: insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir, separatist movements in the North Eastern states, violence by left-wing extremist groups, and terrorist attacks in urban and semi-urban areas that are not directly linked to these categories. By distinguishing between insurgency and terrorism, this report focuses specifically on terrorist incidents in urban and semi-urban contexts, beginning with the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts and covering subsequent incidents up to 2010. The study constructs a comprehensive database using information from English-language newspapers in India, including details such as the date, location, type of attack, explosives used, delivery method, and casualties. The database enables systematic statistical, clustering and spatial analyses of terrorist incidents. Preliminary findings reveal variations in sophistication, with some attacks showing random bomb placement and others exhibiting structured or clustered patterns. Using clustering algorithms, incidents are grouped into categories based on factors such as materials used and delivery methods, while spatial analysis of multiple-blast events provides insights into planning and execution strategies. Such analyses can help classify perpetrator groups based on organisational capability and operational sophistication. Overall, the report highlights the value of structured data in identifying patterns in terrorism and underscores the need for further research to better understand the dynamics of terrorist activity in India.
