Abstract
In keeping with the economic climate, the Government of India changed its long standing industrial policy in 1991, allowing the private sector into areas earlier reserved for public sector units. Telecom equipment manufacture was also thrown open to the private sector, thus ending the monopoly of the protected ITI, the country's oldest PSU. The company suffered heavy losses and in 1996-97, was declared potentially sick. However, rigorous turn-around strategies brought ITI back on its feet by the end of fiscal 1997. Along with an account of ITI's valiant fight back, a new role for PSUs in the changed environment is envisaged.
