Abstract
Influenced by the economic reforms programme, banking in India is witnessing a shift away from meeting social priorities to confronting market forces. This has led to its improved performance during the last two years, generating considerable optimism that the country will eventually be blessed with a sound, streamlined and competitive banking system that would help it successfully meet the challenges of the global marketplace.
