Abstract
A World Bank study conducted through the International Data Corporation (IDC) India and Maxi/Micro Inc places the size of the 1995 software service market at $100 billion. 75% of this opportunity originates from six countries : theUS, Japan, Germany, France, the UK and Italy. The market is growing at 15.5%. per annum. Since domestic suppliers in these countries are increasingly unable to meet the value-for-money’ equation, the bulk of this business has to be outsourced to other countries. As a result, the foreign opportunity & market ($1.4 billion in 1991) is growing at 40% per annum. In the last few years, India has emerged as the leader among countries exporting software services, with a market share in 1995 of about 13.7% ($730 million). Can India sustain and further strengthen its leadership in the years ahead? Or, will the country become complacent and eventually lose out to others who are fast catching up?
