Abstract
The concern that the traditional MBA is too academic and to create a “new cadre of students and faculty characterised by: interest in and knowledge of real problems... and (with) hands on orientation, experimental skills and insight” (Dertouzos et al. 1989), resulted in the collaboration between the business schools and business in the United Kingdom in designing the company-based MBA. These flexible, modular MBA programmes are integrated with work environment and give the participating companies a greater say in the development and implementation of the programme. This paper describes the underpinnings, the perspectives of the stakeholders and the architecture of this learning alliance model. The paper also examines the issues of oncern arising out of this design, in achieving the balanced excellence of academic rigour and professional relevance.
