Abstract

The objective of this paper is to highlight the role of unincorporated
enterprises in the national economy. Most of the studics regarding the nonagricultural
portion of our economy concentrate on the corporate or company sector.
Discussions on saving, taxation, capital formation, etc. also to a large extent pertain
to the corporate sector, consisting of companies which are incorporated under the
Company’s Act of 1956. But the other sector, viz., unincorporated enterprises has
not been studied thoroughly in respect of its role in the national economy. In our
context this should include a study of proprietorships, partnerships, HUFs,
Cooperatives, ie. organisations of all types in the non-government non-private
corporate (company) sector of the economy that are engaged in non-agricultural
activities.
The first section highlights some of the indicators available regarding the
importance of the unincorporated sector and discusses terminological issues. The
second section delas with the share of unincorporated enterprises in national
income, The third section estimates their share in the manufacturing sector and the
fourth section in other sectors (like transport, trade, construction, other services etc).
The fifth section provides estimates regarding capital formation by unincorporated
enterprises and the last section contains conclusion and scope for further research in
the area,
