Abstract

Exponential Pvt. Ltd. (EPL) — a Bombay—based pharmaceutical company was engaged mainly in manufacturing formulations and marginally some bulk drugs. It achieved an annual turnover of about Rs. 10 crores, the result of a fast and consistent growth for eight years practically around 35% compounded annually, against the industry average of 25%. Growth was achieved partly due to the governmental policy supports for the Indian sector in this industry, but primarily because the company’s strongest product (a painkiller-cum—tranquiliser particularly effective for the smooth muscles of the body) had done exceedingly well and captured about 40% of the total analgesic market. EPL employed 20 managerial and 200 non-managerial personnel in the Aurangabad factory, about 130 Professional Service Representatives and 25 Sales Managers headed by 4 Divisional Managers and about 150 people in Materials and Stores, Accountancy and the other central office functions.
