Abstract

Sauvik Chakraverti’s colletion of essays is informative and insightful for those who have not read his newspaper column(s) or been otherwise exposed to the broad social applications of free-market ideas (as exemplified in the writings of the late Julian Simon, the Chicago school economist-cum-demographer and in the editorials of the London Economist). But even for the initiated, the length, range and the Indian content and context of these articles make the book engaging and worthwhile reading. The book comprises ten essays on the following subjects-Population, State, Development, Imperialism, Borders, Morality, Prohibitions, Money, Government and Environment. Many of the ideas he espouses in these essays crop up in several places, not always germane to the topic.
