Abstract
The Round Table this time is on Liberalisation in South Asia. This coincides with, and is dedicated to the International Conference in Chennai on Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia, cosponsored by the Montclair State University in the US, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, and the Mohamed Sathak Trust in Chennai. Scholars from 64 Universities and Business Schools in 17 countries ranging from the United States and Canada in the West, through United Kingdom and the European Continent, down to Australia and New Zealand together with their counterparts in the Indian sub-continent presented and discussed technical papers at this conference. Eminent thinkers, policymakers and business persons addressed several plenary sessions at this conference which was inaugurated by Her Excellency, Justice Fatima Biwi, Governor of Tamil Nadu. Management Review is proud to present in this Round Table a selection of the papers; further articles will appear in subsequent issues of the Review. The full text of all the papers may be found in a book brought out by Macmillan India that is commercially available at leading book stores or directly from the publishers. Among the other offerings, this issue includes a thought provoking introspection by K L Chopra on the Republic of Knowledge. Coulson-Thomas provides a road map for creating and managing the virtual corporation. Kimber and Birchall explore the role of values and trust in the context of building social capital, while Anup Singh suggests a dose of self-empowerment as an instrument of leadership development. Shyamal Roy analyses the country's latest fiscal exercise and finds some leads that could help a turnaround. As usual, we have reviews of must-read books. Feedback on the June issue that focused on management education has been very encouraging. To all those who took time off to tell us what they thought of this Round Table feature, our deepest gratitude and sincere thanks. Please continue to write in and help us to take the Review to greater heights.
