Abstract

Population density is one of the basic elements of urban form, as the size, structure, or age of the cities are often expressed in this element. The dynamic nature of urban growth has its influence on urban density. Various theories have been propounded to analyse the density gradients of urban areas of the developed as well as of the developing world. The negative-exponential model has also been applied by some workers to explain the density gradients of some Indian cities. The various models of urban population density gradients along with the problems of data generation and their application to fit in suitable models in the context of Indian cities are examined. Some correlates of population density based on the density of Bangalore city are examined as a case study.-Authors
