Abstract
Tlhis paper reports some of the findings of a seven-month field study of the daily-hire market for rural labor in India, carried out in three adjoining villages in the state of Karnataka. The purpose of the study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of wage behavior, with a geo graphical coverage necessarily restricted for that reason, and to see what conclusions of general validity might emerge from the region-specific understanding gained, without imposing any claim whatever of typicality on the region studied.
