Abstract

In an earlier symposium on location analysis and rural economic development, the debate focused on two commonly advocated methodologies of planning the locations of services and infrastructural facilities in rural areas in developing countries: the urban functions in rural development approach and the location-allocation model. This article discusses the utility and appropriateness of the two methodologies in the context of actual planning processes and some of the major research efforts in India.
